There are plenty of things to like about the greater Phoenix area and I love to visit every chance I get. The weather is great year round and there's always something to do, whether it's a concert or a sporting event. Old Town Scottsdale is it's own special place with great shopping, a lively nightlife, and of course, great food. Hula's Modern Tiki is one of those great places.
You'll find this oasis right in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale. It has a cool modern vibe that pays homage to vintage tiki roots. On a good day the patio is a great place to enjoy any of their signature drinks, like a Mai Tai, or a Tiki Time Appetizer, like their Hawaiian Ceviche. The patio was full during my visit so I'll have to go back to enjoy just that.
One of their fresh fish dishes really caught my eye. You can choose from Ahi, Mahi, Hapu or Tofu and have it prepared in a variety of different ways. I have my usual go-to fish, but an adventure wouldn't really be an adventure if I didn't try something new.
I opted for the Hapu, which is a Hawaiian Sea Bass. It had a delicate and mild flavor that I thought would go well prepared Hula Pan Fried. It was topped with a soy-miso sauce, shiitake mushrooms, and green onions. It was also served with a side of steamed rice and slaw.
Let's be honest, just look at the sauce! I promise you it was as good as it looks. It was silky smooth and had a nice balance of saltiness that complimented the Hapu. The mushrooms were perfectly sautéed and tender and added a nice earthiness to "that perfect bite".
I highly recommend putting Hula's Modern Tiki on your foodie adventure bucket list. They are locally owned and operated and have a second location in Phoenix. Over the years they have rightfully won plenty of awards for their fabulous food. It's certainly still on my list so I can enjoy more of what they have to offer, especially that patio. Mahalo!
