Bowl of Pho - Woodmere, OH

For my last night in Cleveland (at least for this trip) there was a slight dust of snow on the ground so I wanted something warm. close to where I was staying. What better way to get warm than with a traditional vietnamese beef pho soup. Luckily there was this place right down the street.

I remember the first time I had pho and it was while I was visiting my dad when he was working out of town. The owner was such a chain smoker; I swear she went through one whole pack just during dinner! Despite the second hand smoke, I was smitten by the aroma and flavor of beef pho and since then have sought out places that can replicate the flavor. As with many traditional recipes, each one is just a little bit different so it is hit or miss for me to find just the right place.

I was a little weary about the place at first as I was the only guest there, however, after waiting just a few minutes it was clear that this was a happening place to be. There were regulars that came in and the staff seemed to know them pretty well. The service was so quick and friendly.

I started with an appetizer of fresh spring rolls with pork and shrimp. It was perfectly fresh and the house hoisin sauce was not too sweet and had a little bit of a kick to it. Loved it!

Overall the pho was a good choice for a warm dish on a balmy night. Although it didn’t have the the exact notes of beefy herby soupiness from what I remember as a kid, it was pretty decent. Again, the hoisin sauce was tasty and I asked for more to add to my soup and the sprouts were the perfect addition to add some freshness as well.

Overall I would eat here again, but I will continue my search to find that “perfect” pho.
